Happy Summer!!

We have been dining al fresco and doing lots of outdoor get-togethers with family and friends this summer. Since I like to put my DIY touch on anything that involves entertaining, I thought that making drink stirrers would be such a great idea. They are unique, super customizable, and fun to make.

I am using my tried and true (and one of my favorite craft supplies) Sculpey Clay. There are 7 sparkly glitter colors for the Sculpey III line, which is very exciting because there hasn’t been glitter Sculpey III before! These new colors include White, Black, Violet, Pink, Turquoise, Blue and Garnet Glitter. You can also combine the new colors with your current favorite SIII colors to add some sparkle to all of your clay creations!

The idea for drink stirrers popped in my head because I was thinking it could be a great way for people to keep track of whose drink is whose. Grab a paint pen or permanent marker and each person can write their name.

This is also a great DIY to do with the kids. My boys love to play with clay and basically beg me to make fun, new projects. The Sculpey III clay is super easy to work with. I am very picky when it comes to my clay and I would not steer you in the wrong direction. This class is easy to roll out and create any shape you like AND it will be durable and hold its shape after baking. The options are endless, but start with these easy drink stirrers (easy enough anyone can do it).

Materials

  • Sculpey III oven-bake clay; white for base and at least two-three additional colors
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Circle cookie cutter
  • Plastic drink stirrer
  • Baking sheet

Directions

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven according to package instructions.

Working on a clean surface, roll out the SIII white clay so that it’s slightly thicker than 1/4 inch using a rolling pin; you can use parchment paper to assist with the rolling by placing the clay between two sheets of the parchment.

Cut small pieces off of the other colors of clay and sprinkle them over the white clay that is rolled out. I’m using pink, turquoise, and black for a bright and fun summer look.

Use the rolling pin to roll the small pieces of clay into the larger pieces of white clay.

Use the cookie cutter to cut out the circle shapes. You will use two circles for one drink stirrer.

Place the drink stirrer between two of the circles and use your hands to smooth the two circles together.

Remove the drink stirrer and place on the prepared baking sheet.

Repeat with the rest of the clay.

Bake according to package instructions.

Allow to cool.

Place the drink stirrer back into the center of the two circles and the drink stirrer is ready.

If you want to make these drink tags, simply write the name on the oven-baked clay with a permanent marker or a paint pen.

Tips to make DIY Summer Drink Stirrers From Scratch

Parchment paper can be used to help roll out clay.

A little corn starch on the rolling pin helps prevent the pin from sticking to the clay.

Make sure the rolling pin and cookie cutter used are dedicated to crafting. I like to keep these in my craft supplies for easy access and zero confusion.

Use an oven thermometer to make sure your temperature is correct in your oven.
