Growing Grass For Your Easter Basket
When I was growing up my mom would always do so many things for each holiday to make it special and memorable. One of our Easter traditions was growing grass in an Easter Basket. It seems like such a simple thing, but as kids my sister and I always thought it was fun to watch. My mom did this every year until we moved out. My sister and I are both in different states, but my mom put together “Grow Your Own Easter Grass” kits for us (with her instructions) that we can have in our homes for Easter. Each year I do this it makes me very nostalgic and, of course, makes me miss living close to my mom.
This is a fun and really easy decoration that becomes a tradition!
*Place wheat grass seeds in a bowl and cover with water
*Allow to soak 8 hours or overnight
*Use a basket fitted with a plastic liner (You should be able to find these at a gardening store or craft store)
*Fill the lined basket with moistened potting soil (use a spray bottle to moisten)
*Drain the wheat seed and spread evenly over the grass
*Cover with plastic wrap and set in a place that will get good sunlight
(Please note the instruction book my mom made for us!)
*Spray 3 times a day for the first day
*Spray each day… it’s important to keep the seeds moist
*Once the seeds start sprouting (maybe a day after they start looking like the picture below) you can remove the plastic wrap
*Spray every other day
*Watch the grass grow!
*You can tell if you are watering too much if the basket becomes heavy… if it is light then it needs to be watered
*The grass will need to be trimmed after about 5-7 days depending on how long you would like it to be
*The grass should last a few weeks if watered and trimmed properly
*Decorate with Easter items!
… Thanks to my mom for this fun idea…
Absolutely darling. I’m going to make them for my kids and grandkids instead of the regular baskets
Thanks Maureen!! I hope you guys have fun with them 🙂
So so cute. I am going to miss you when the show ends in August. I loved watching you be a sweet momma and wife to all your fellows. May God bless you and your family.
This is the cutest idea ever!! I am absolutely doing this next year!!!
