Tennis Ball Dot Cakes

These tennis ball dot cakes are the perfect dessert for tennis fans, watch parties, team celebrations, and tournament weekends. Inspired by the popular dot cake trend, they're made by cutting cake into small rounds, coating them in buttercream, rolling them in yellow nonpareil sprinkles, and decorating them to look like tennis balls.

Ingredients

  • Prepared cake of choice, baked and cooled
  • Homemade buttercream frosting, or your favorite buttercream recipe
  • Yellow nonpareil sprinkles

Equipment

Mini glass jars or small round cutters
Piping bag
Small round piping tip
Baking sheet or tray

Instructions

Cut the Cake

  • Bake and cool your favorite cake. Using a mini glass jar or small round cutter, cut circles from the cake. The jar acts as both a cutter and a mold, helping create the perfect tennis ball shape.

Add the Buttercream

  • Spread a thick layer of buttercream frosting around each cake round and use a knife or offset spatula to create a clean, flat top. The frosting will help the sprinkles stick while creating a smooth finish.

Create the Tennis Ball Texture

  • Pour the yellow nonpareil sprinkles into a bowl. Press each buttercream-covered cake round in the sprinkles until completely coated. Gently press the sprinkles into the frosting if needed to ensure full coverage.

Pipe the Tennis Ball Lines

  • Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with white buttercream frosting. Pipe the curved tennis ball lines across the top of each cake, following the classic tennis ball design.
  • Serve and Enjoy
  • Place the finished tennis ball dot cakes on a serving platter and enjoy immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve.
