Tennis Ball Dot Cakes

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen dot cakes everywhere. This fun dessert trend has taken over feeds, with bakers creating adorable bite-sized cakes in every shape and theme imaginable. As soon as I saw them, I knew I had to put my own spin on the trend—and as a tennis-loving family, turning them into tennis balls felt like the perfect choice!
These Tennis Ball Dot Cakes are especially fun to make during tournament season. Whether you’re hosting a watch party for the Roland Garros finals, celebrating a team victory, or looking for a creative treat for your favorite tennis player, these little cakes are guaranteed to be a hit. They look impressive, but they’re actually much easier to make than you might think.
One of my favorite parts of this recipe is the simple trick I use to create the perfect shape. Instead of purchasing a specialty mold, I use mini glass jars as both a cookie cutter and a mold for the cake. It’s an easy kitchen hack that helps create uniform, round cakes every time. Once the cakes are shaped, they’re coated in my homemade buttercream frosting, rolled in bright yellow nonpareil sprinkles, and decorated with white buttercream lines to mimic the look of a real tennis ball.
The combination of soft cake, creamy buttercream, and crunchy sprinkles makes these as delicious as they are cute. Plus, they’re completely customizable. Use your favorite cake flavor, experiment with different frosting flavors, or make them ahead of time for a party or tournament weekend.
I love creating desserts that bring people together, and these Tennis Ball Dot Cakes definitely do that. They’re playful, festive, and perfect for tennis fans of all ages. Whether you’re cheering on your favorite player from the couch or celebrating a big match with friends and family, these sweet little tennis balls are sure to score a winning point.
Now grab your cake, frosting, and sprinkles—it’s time to make some Tennis Ball Dot Cakes!

Equipment
Instructions
Cut the Cake
- Bake and cool your favorite cake. Using a mini glass jar or small round cutter, cut circles from the cake. The jar acts as both a cutter and a mold, helping create the perfect tennis ball shape.
Add the Buttercream
- Spread a thick layer of buttercream frosting around each cake round and use a knife or offset spatula to create a clean, flat top. The frosting will help the sprinkles stick while creating a smooth finish.
Create the Tennis Ball Texture
- Pour the yellow nonpareil sprinkles into a bowl. Press each buttercream-covered cake round in the sprinkles until completely coated. Gently press the sprinkles into the frosting if needed to ensure full coverage.
Pipe the Tennis Ball Lines
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with white buttercream frosting. Pipe the curved tennis ball lines across the top of each cake, following the classic tennis ball design.
- Serve and Enjoy
- Place the finished tennis ball dot cakes on a serving platter and enjoy immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve.
